Medieval festival “La Spada nella Rocca” (eng. “The sword in the fortress“) is held annually in the city of Bellinzona – the administrative and touristic center of the Italian-speaking Swiss canton of Ticino, located at the south of the country and bordering the north of Italy.
The city Bellinzona is worldwide known for its three medieval fortresses included in UNESCO World Heritage:
- Castello di Sasso Corbaro
- Castello di Montebello
The Medieval festival “La Spada nella Rocca” is held in the fortress Castelgrande – the oldest and largest one in the group of these fortifications. From the walls of the fortress in the Middle Ages it was possible to have a broad overview to control and to protect from attacks, and at present – a picturesque panorama of the medieval city center. The festival program is organized for guests right at the famous fortress, surrounded by fortified walls with a long history and alpine mountains with snow-capped peaks.
Every detail of the festival program is thorougfully thought out and based on historical information about the times of the Middle Ages. The scenery of medieval life, medieval parade, installations of medieval battles, costumes of warriors and just of medieval craftsmen and merchants, even harness of horses – everything is made maximally in the medieval style to create for the festival’s guests the possible similar atmosphere of the Middle Ages.
