The main professional occupation of the inhabitants of the Tuscan town of Montepulciano is cultivation of grapes and production of wine. The wine Nobile di Montepulciano (noble wine) has been famous throughout the world for many centuries.
The main entertainment and the main feast of the locals, from the far 14th century to the present day, corresponds to the main occupation – the inhabitants of the town compete in … pushing of rolling barrels! And not small ones, but real heavy wine barrels.
The competition Bravio delle Botti is held by 8 teams of the town’s districts. Each team chooses the two strongest inhabitants of its district, whose task is to push a barrel of 80 kg weight along the streets about 2 km and to make it as fast as possible!
After the triumphant victory of one of the teams, the global feast begins in the streets of the victorious district: medieval costumed performances, dances and dinner with Italian delicacies and Tuscan wines.
